SBS will broadcast ADM+S documentary Flightpaths, Freeways and Railroads on national TV and the SBS on-demand platform.
Flightpaths, Freeways and Railroads is a collection of three short films by ADM+S Research Fellow Jeni Lee which takes us on a journey with two blind and one deaf person as they move around urban and regional spaces. The short films illustrate the challenges and opportunities that emerging technologies pose for diverse groups as they commute. It draws on the principles of Communication for Social Change (CSC) to explore the question: How could technology best assist us to move freely in the future?

The films follow Micaela Schmidt, a blind advocate and access consultant living in Albury-Wodonga with her guide dog Ellie; Brenton Lillecrapp, a learning mentor who lives and works in Adelaide; and Orhan Karagoz, an anthropologist from the northern suburbs of Melbourne who tries out some Orientation and Mobility apps with his Vision Australia trainer, Darren Moyle.
“The central idea to these films is that people who live in any community will be the best people to identify the key challenges they face. They will also be in the best position to innovate solutions within their own cultural context and in their everyday lives,” said Jeni.
Flightpaths, Freeways and Railroads forms part of the larger Future Automated Mobilities project at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making & Society (ADM+S). The project explores how diverse participants currently experience transport mobilities and how automated technologies might be part of our future lives. These films aim to surface impacts of ADM that haven’t been accounted for and explore barriers and biases propagated and amplified by ADM in society.
Flightpaths, Freeways and Railroads will be broadcasted today on SBS at 3.25pm and 3.30pm (AEDT) with audio descriptions. The documentary will also be screened at the Future Automated Mobilities Symposium on Friday 21 October in Melbourne and online. Register to attend.
