The ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) has partnered with She’s A Crowd, a social enterprise working to end gender-based violence, to investigate the shortfalls of automated decision-making (ADM) within the rideshare sector.

In a short film co-produced by ADM+S researchers Jeni Lee and Dr Emma Equilty, She’s Not Alone, they highlight the everyday stories of ridesharing and gender-based violence. It invites us to consider how trust and safety are outsourced to automated systems, how real stories can help us to address the real problems of automation in transport, and asks, whose help do we need to ensure we’re not alone in our desire for a better future with technologies of automation?

The docu-drama challenges the idea that artificial intelligence is the way to solve problems that arise for so many rideshare users, suggesting instead that we imagine a future where safety involves a combination of technology, human connections and community support.

She’s Not Alone premieres on Friday 21 October 2022 at the Future Automated Mobilities Symposium in Melbourne and online. Register to attend.
