PROF GERARD GOGGIN

Professor Gerard Goggin is an Associate Investigator at the Western Sydney University node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making & Society (ADM+S).

Gerard is Professor in the Institute for Culture & Society at Western Sydney University. He has longstanding research interests and collaboration in mobile media and communication, global media policy, social justice and human rights – especially in relation to disability, accessibility, and inclusive design.

Professor Gerard Goggin is a distinguished scholar of international repute who has made foundational contributions to our understanding of key dynamics of contemporary digital media, communications, and culture. He is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of the field of mobile communication research through his ground-breaking work on the impact of mobile phones for cultural and social life. Professor Goggin is also a world leader in research on digital inclusion, inequalities, and rights, especially in the crucial area of disability, accessibility, and inclusive design. He has 24 books and over 200 research papers and chapters, including prominent works in top journals such as New Media & Society, The Information Society, and Information, Communication & Society.

Professor Goggin is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities, a Fellow of the International Communication Association and serves as the Secretary-General of the International Association of Media and Communications Research, the preeminent worldwide professional organisation in the field of media and communication research. His work has been funded by Australian, Canadian, and Singaporean research grant agencies to a career total of over A$6 million in grants.

He has served in many expert and advisory roles including, most recently, Chair of the Advisory Board for the Institute of Culture & Society at Western Sydney University.
