DR ISABELLA MAHONEY
Dr Isabella Mahoney is a Research Fellow at the Monash University node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision Making and Society (ADM+S), working on the ‘Australian Ad Observatory’ project providing qualitative analysis of political advertising on social media platforms. Isabella also works on the Australian Research Council Discovery Project ‘Mapping Australians’ Media Use and Civic Attitudes’ at Monash, investigating how Australians’ media habits and rituals shape their civic values.
She has previous experience as ADM+S Monash Node Administrator and as a Research Assistant for the Ad Observatory, analysing aesthetics of problematic “scam” advertisements on social media.
With a background in film and visual culture, Isabella is passionate about how specifics of form engender meaning, and recently completed a PhD in Film and Screen Studies at Monash. Her doctoral research ‘Re-vocalising the Screen Siren: From Homer to Hollywood’ examined actresses’ vocal powers in changing contexts of cinema and online, through a counter-historical reading of the Grecian mythology of the Sirens. She has also worked as a Film and Media tutor at Monash University.
Her interdisciplinary research combines film theory and aesthetics (particularly re stardom, vocality, and gender studies), histories of technology, and democracy and social change.
