Professor Jean Burgess is Associate Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society, Director of the Digital Media Research Centre (DMRC) at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), and a current member of the ARC College of Experts. She was previously Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries & Innovation (2011-2014), and Director of Research Training for the QUT Creative Industries Faculty. Her research focuses on the social implications of digital media technologies, platforms, and cultures, as well as new and innovative digital methods for studying them.
In addition to more than 100 articles and chapters, she is an author or editor of six books, the latest of which is Twitter – A Biography (with Nancy Baym, New York University Press, 2020). She has held a number of ARC Discovery and Linkage grants and has partnered successfully with a range of Australian and international government, industry and community organisations to address the practical challenges and opportunities posed by digital and social media.
