Miguel Gomez-Hernandez, from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society at Monash University, has spent 3 weeks at AlgoSoc, a leading hub hosted at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), for the integration of public values in automated decision systems and the algorithmic society.

During the visit, hosted by UvA researchers Prof Julia van Weert, Miguel developed international perspectives on his research exploring the responsible integration of automated eHealth in the lives of older adults.

Miguel’s research focuses on future smart home technology for older people through industry and older people’s visions. .

“By immersing myself in AlgoSoc, I have deepened my theoretical knowledge, refined my research approach, and established a solid foundation for contributing effectively to the discourse surrounding the responsible integration of automated eHealth in the lives of older adults”, said Miguel.

AlgoSoc leverages the expertise of some of the world’s highest ranking groups in communication, law, governance, health, humancentric AI, computer and data science to develop solutions for the design of governance frameworks needed to complement technology-driven initiatives in the algorithmic society.

At AlgoSoc and UvA Miguel met other health researchers and anthropologists from different parts of the world working on technology and futures such as Dr. Roanne van Voorst, her team, and fellow anthropologists.

“Seeing the growing interdisciplinary interest in futures and health at AlgoSoc and UvA, my research question is now more aligned with these fields as I find promising and important work to be done in this space”.

Miguel is continuing to explore collaborations with the researchers he met at UvA with plans to organise conference panels, workshops, and publications on futures, health, and ageing technology.

The University of Amsterdam is a Partner Organisation of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society, fostering collaboration for ADM+S members in an international network.

This research visit was supported by ADM+S and the University of Amsterdam.
