
2023 ADM+S Symposium to highlight latest research in AI and automation in news, media and entertainment

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) will share their latest findings and map out future agendas for research on AI and automation in news, media and entertainment at the annual ADM+S Symposium.
The symposium will be hosted at the University of Sydney Law School,Camperdown, NSW from 13 to 14 July with the option to join online.
The symposium will feature keynotes, panel discussions and conversations with leading international and national researchers, industry representatives, advocacy groups and policymakers.
Topics will include:
- Generative AI in news production and online advertising
- Automation in the Creative Arts
- Automated fact-checking

The symposium will feature keynote speakers from across the globe including:
- Professor Bronwyn Carlson, Macquarie University, Australia
- Professor Wiebke Loosen, Hans Bredow Institut, Germany
- Assistant Professor Nick Seaver, Tufts University, USA
- Tarunima Prabhakar, Tattle, India
The symposium will also showcase the latest outcomes of major ADM+S projects including the Australian Ad Observatory, Mapping the Digital Gap and Australian Search Experience.
At 6:30pm on Thursday 13 July a public panel on Internet Futures will address the rapid developments in internet infrastructures and AI technologies, and discuss questions around the dynamic possibilities and uncertain pathways these developments present for internet governance, social media platforms, media industries, and digital inclusion.
Dr James Meese, co-leader of the News and Media Focus Area at the ADM+S, said “With AI tools becoming increasingly accessible to the public, and the media sector at the centre of new developments in automation, I can’t think of a better time to hold this event.”
“We look forward to sharing outcomes from our projects, learning from our invited speakers and collectively working to set an agenda for the socially responsible use of automated decision-making across our intensively mediated society,” he said.
