Simon Taylor is an Affiliate of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making & Society (ADM+S) from the Australian National University.
Simon Michael Taylor completed his dissertation in 2023 at UNSW Sydney while a Research Associate at Allens Hub for Technology, Law and Innovation. His scholarship uses a subset of Science and Technology studies to examine mobility of data, models, systems in non-domain specific problem solving of Artificial Intelligence. Case studies included digital forensics and biometrics; attributions of error in sensing, drones and robotics; computed hallucinations and data aggregation from AI models in storage. This work is pertinent to horizon scanning on risks and regulation of AI supply chains, datasets, and executed outcomes.
Alongside this work is a strong track record of policy advisory with IP experts, legal scholars, data scientists, ICT professionals on AI in education, cyber security, privacy, and AI Safety Forum alumni. As a SANS certified data security expert Simon currently works as Lead AI specialist for a cyber security firm in Canberra.
He is tasked with third-party assessments of private sector and government digital, AI and critical infrastructure systems to legislation and trust frameworks. His expertise has also been critical to drafting of legislation, rules and data standards while working with and within the DTA, Department of Finance, and the ACCC.
His academic work includes Mellon Sawyer Funded, Histories of AI at Cambridge University (2020-2022); lecturer in Digital Media at University of Sydney (2020-22); Visiting Fellow at RegNet School of Regulation and Global Governance ANU (2023-25); and currently an affiliate at Machine Intelligence and Normative Theory Lab (MINT) at John Hopkins University USA. Relevant publications are in AI & Society (2020); Science, Technology & Human Values (2021); Special Issue for British Journal for History of Science (2023) on AI in agriculture; Cambridge Handbook on Facial Recognition (2024) with other ADM+S investigators.
