abstract = {This article articulates strategies citizens engage in to reclaim their agency in an increasingly fragmented and unmoderated algorithmic public sphere. Drawing on the case of the North Atlantic Fella Organization (NAFO), we demonstrate how playful, 

 allegorithmic 

 civic practices constitute a participatory response to disinformation at the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Capitalising on their algorithmic literacy, algorithmic resistance, and algorithmic becoming, 

 allegorithmic citizens 

 may find alternative ways to challenge the status quo in wartime, mobilising resources to support communities in crisis when traditional governance mechanisms fail. With the growing interest in harms from online humour and memes in democratic societies, NAFO’s playful reclaiming of the notions of algorithm extends understanding of civic participatory practices. But on a more fundamental level, these 

 allegorithmic 

 citizenship acts foster social cohesion and solidarity among social media users who question the ethical responsibilities that come with witnessing a distant war unfold on their feed.},

abstract = {Contemporary maps are creatures of “mobile AI,” the linkage of machine learning with communication and mobility, which we now think of as a significant “next phase” of digital communication. In this article, we address this AI-driven “next phase” by examining the current AI-facilitated developments that are reshaping mobile maps and navigational apps. We consider how AI tools are changing the maps that we have (how maps are made), how we interact with mobile maps and navigation services (how maps are used), and their purposes (what maps are doing). By analyzing mobile maps at the intersection of geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI), platformization, and mobile AI, this article shows how the automation of navigation reorganizes everyday mobility, redistributes decision-making, and generates new political, economic, and social questions. Mobile maps offer a particularly revealing case for understanding how AI is being embedded into mobile media, how value is extracted from movement, and how infrastructural decisions are increasingly delegated to platform systems.},

abstract = {Recent global events have prompted a flurry of boycott and divestment campaigns targeting foreign governments, expressed through social media. These surrogate boycotts \textendash targeting corporate proxies of state actors \textendash are often dismissed as merely expressive, though this assessment is based primarily on the outcomes of the campaign rather than the motivations of participants. This article investigates the motivations conveyed by individuals posting calls for a boycott of Russia on Twitter following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Bridging literatures on political participation, political consumerism, and digital activism, we develop and implement a novel two-stage method for inferring expressive and instrumental motivations from digital trace data. Through computational analysis and applying a new typology, we show that inferred motivations for boycott calls on social media can be positioned along a spectrum \textendash from expressive to instrumental \textendash based on: (i) identification of a target; (ii) attempts to enable others; and (iii) expectation of an outcome.},

abstract = {This article draws on concepts of 

 speculative design 

 and 

 responsible innovation 

 to examine the possible impacts of data-driven precision agriculture on farmers and farm work. We use an innovative mixed-method approach to research design. Using artistic depiction of futures of precision agriculture in design workshop and in-depth semistructured interviews conducted with the farmers in Vermont and South Dakota, we explain how farmers perceive different futures of precision agriculture. Specifically, in our design workshop, we combined visual arts and social science methods, namely Q-method, to explore existing and new relationships between humans, technologies, and environment in the design, deployment, and use of data, algorithms, and automation in agriculture. Results from the Q-method and accompanying interviews reveal four distinct typologies: (a) farmers who believe that no technology can fully control nature but still recognize the value of innovative tools; (b) those who see precision agriculture technologies like grid-mapping as valuable for improving operational efficiency; (c) those who envision automation as central to the future of agriculture; and (d) others who anticipate the growing role of tech-savvy organizations and experts in supporting decision-making on the ground. Our study suggests that despite the techno-optimism demonstrated by farmers, many still desire to stay deeply involved and active in on-farm decision-making. This study shows that inclusive and anticipatory methods such as Q-methodology and design workshops can help surface farmers’ preferred futures while accounting for human\textendashnonhuman interdependencies.},

abstract = {Since their introduction in late 2022, generative AI applications have proliferated as Big Tech companies seek to encourage widespread adoption from the public. This article reports on the findings from exploratory qualitative research conducted in mid-2025 with Australian adults about their knowledge, everyday practices and imaginaries related to generative AI. Nearly all participants, regardless of their age, gender, ethnicity or geographical location, had experimented with generative AI applications, and many had incorporated them into their quotidian routines. However, far from being enchanted by these technologies, these Australians saw them as little more than mundane software that was now pervasive and therefore unavoidable. Generative AI was described as offering useful tools or helpers for achieving better efficiency, time-saving, and productivity in accomplishing routine tasks at home and work. Most participants were aware that the tools frequently generated incorrect information, and therefore required checking, but seemed largely untroubled about this. They expressed concerns about the impacts of possibilities of fake information, scams and data privacy issues, and the loss of learning or critical thinking that generative AI use could cause. However, participants also expressed feelings of powerlessness over what they could do to avoid using generative AI in the face of the determination by Big Tech \textendash and in some cases, employers and educational institutions \textendash to promote its use. More profound negative impacts were mostly recounted as abstract or as potential problems in a future world if generative AI development by Big Tech was allowed to progress unchecked.},

abstract = {While a great deal of critical attention has been focused on the experimental use of automotive sensing technologies within electronic vehicle development, their integration into production cars continues apace. Despite a long history of incorporating vision and other automated sensing systems into production cars, we are yet to fully appreciate how these ‘smart objects’ function and interoperate, how ‘observable’ these systems are (Rieder and Hofmann, 2020), what roles they play in shaping our day-to-day experiences of the automation of automotive space. In this article, we examine the vision-sensing capacities of one proprietary in-vehicle computer vision system (Subaru EyeSight) and how its visual sensors operate and interoperate to form a unified ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) accident mitigation system. In particular, we seek to understand the forms of driver-to-vehicle handover that modern ADAS facilitate and require. Drawing on social scientist James Ash’s concept of ‘phase space’, and cyberneticist W. Ross Ashby’s earlier conception of ‘phase-space’, our contention in this article is that ADAS like EyeSight actively intervenes in and reconfigures automotive space. We detail how EyeSight’s automated vision sensors and decision-making system reshapes how automotive space is viewed, understood, and acted upon, with implications for those behind the wheel.},

 ’s 30th anniversary special issue provides an update on an article I contributed for the 20th anniversary of 

 Health 

 in 2016 which outlined how the sub-field of critical digital health studies has been explored in the journal. The current review article is in two parts. It begins with an overview of digital health research published in 

 Health 

 in the decade since the first review was published, reflecting on the methods and conceptual approaches that have been used over the past 10 years to engage with this topic. The second part goes on to consider how critical digital health studies might address the latest ‘big thing’ in digital health: generative AI applications. Some bold claims have been made about the benefits that generative AI models are supposed to offer patients and healthcare providers, but their impacts have not yet been fully evaluated from a critical digital health perspective. The article ends by emphasising the importance of acknowledging and identifying how the introduction of generative AI applications into medicine and health care can harm humans and the ecosystems of which they are part. Critical digital health studies should therefore expand its focus beyond its current human-centric preoccupations. As an interdisciplinary social research journal from its inception, 

 Health 

 is well-placed to offer a home for such critical analyses.},

 In recent years, there has been a rapid and massive expansion of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and infrastructures. Big AI Tech corporations are vigorously marketing these services in the pursuit of profit, despite their devastating impacts on the environment. A body of sociological inquiry into generative AI technologies is beginning to develop, but most of this research is human‐centric, with few studies focusing specifically on their ecological costs. To meet this gap, this review's aims are threefold: (i) to advance a more‐than‐human theoretical perspective in sociological analyses of generative AI's impacts on the natural world; (ii) to introduce the body of literature in the humanities that has already adopted this critical approach; and (iii) to thereby demonstrate the importance of this scholarship in expanding and deepening sociological inquiry into this topic. Insights from more‐than‐human theory, the digital environmental humanities, critical AI, data and data centre studies, and creative arts‐based work are discussed. This scholarship emphasises the importance of continued interdisciplinary social critique and creative inquiry into the harms posed to the natural world\textemdashand by extension, to humans\textemdashby generative AI development and use.},
