SHUXUAN (ANNIE) LUO
Shuxuan (Annie) Luo is a Research Assistant at the University of Sydney node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making & Society (ADM+S).
Annie is passionate about working towards ethical and responsible AI technologies. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with double majors in Applied Mathematics & Statistics and Political Philosophy from Emory University, and is pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Sydney on the Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship.
Her previous research centred on leveraging AI to help implement workplace anti-discrimination laws.
Her undergraduate thesis proposed machine learning methods to detect proxies of protected characteristics to ensure fairer training data, so as to encourage equal employment opportunity. Shuxuan’s additional publication proposed a Bayesian tool for detecting discrimination.
By participating in stimulating projects at the ADM+S centre and with fresh perspectives from her legal studies, Annie is excited to expand her focus towards a broader field of responsible AI, including one defined under privacy laws and human rights laws.
