
Building international collaborations with Peking University

In early February, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society at RMIT hosted a delegation of professors and PhD students from Peking University’s School of Journalism and Communication, including School Dean Professor Chen Gang.
Peking University stands at the forefront of global academic research and the School is consistently ranked first among Chinese universities for journalism and communication.
The delegation wase officially welcomed by Professor Tim Marshall, Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President (Design and Social Context); Associate Dean Lisa Waller, School of Media and Communication; and Distinguished Professor Julian Thomas, ADM+S Centre Director.
The visit provided an opportunity to explore potential collaboration between Peking University and both ADM+S and RMIT. Planning is now underway to co-deliver a range of activities, including collaborative research, professional development, student and early career research training, curriculum development, opportunities for staff exchanges, and joint events.
As part of the visit, three Peking University students participated in the ADM+S Summer School, received mentoring from ADM+S researchers and professional staff, and attended the social trivia night hosted by Chief Investigator Professor Daniel Angus.
To further develop the partnership, the delegation invited ADM+S students and staff to attend the upcoming Peking University Summer Program in July 2026. The program, delivered in English, will focus on topics including advertising and AI, internet governance, AI and human interaction, and media and society Participants will also visit leading technology companies such as ByteDance and Tencent, alongside cultural sites including the Summer Palace.
ADM+S Chief Operating Officer Nick Walsh said, “We were delighted to host this delegation and the visit was a terrific success. It created meaningful opportunities to strengthen connections, share ideas, and identify areas for future collaboration.”
