PHOEBE MATICH

Phoebe Matich is a post-doctoral research fellow at the QUT node of the ADM+S centre, who is examining Generative AI and Authenticity in Journalism and Human Rights Media. Having just completed her PhD study in QUT’s Digital Media Research Centre, her research focuses on journalism practice and discourse and considers how journalists represent reality.

While her PhD has evaluated how journalists engage with misinformation claims, her ADM+S work considers what authenticity means in journalism and how generative AI relates to journalistic witnessing and misinformation.

As a researcher, Phoebe explores how news practices (especially representation) relate to ethics, power, and social change. She is particularly interested in how journalists strive to achieve normative goals like objectivity in practice amid conjunctures like misinformation, radicalisation, or generative AI.

In these contexts, she considers the nexus between journalism practice, audience trust, and broader political developments to examine best and worst news practices, and opportunities for improvements.
