ADM+S Associate Investigator and Senior Research Fellow at the GenAI Lab at QUT, Dr Aaron Snoswell met with the Head of International Affairs at the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation of Chile to discuss the evolving regulatory landscapes of artificial intelligence in Australia and Chile.

The discussion focused on fostering global collaboration in AI governance, sharing insights into best practices, and examining opportunities to address the challenges posed by rapid technological advancements.

Mr Gonzalo Arenas, Head of International Affairs at the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation of Chile has a career spanning roles in international relations within the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) sector, and has facilitated agreements with world-renowned institutions such as MIT, Harvard, Columbia, and China’s Ministry of Science and Technology.

“AI is a technology that doesn’t respect borders. As such, AI governance inherently needs to involve international cooperation.” said Dr Snoswell.

Discussions explored how Australia and Chile can jointly contribute to shaping global AI norms and standards, leveraging their respective strengths. For Chile, this includes integrating AI initiatives into its broader focus on sustainable development, such as clean technologies and renewable energy. For ADM+S, it means contributing its research expertise in the societal impacts of AI to inform robust regulatory frameworks both here in Australia and within the asia pacific region more broadly.

Chile has been an active participant in international AI safety efforts, with representation at the 2023 UK AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park and at the 2024 Seoul AI Safety Summit, and as part of the organizing comittee for the upcoming Paris AI Action Summit in Feburary 2025. Chile published its first National AI Policy in 2021 and since then there have been significant advances such as the creation of the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (CENIA) and the creation of the first AI doctorate in Chile and Latin America.
