Utami Kusumawati
Utami Kusumawati is an Affiliate of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making & Society (ADM+S) from RMIT University.
Utami is currently a PhD student at the School of Media and Communication at RMIT’s College of Design and Social Context.
Her PhD research focuses on the impact and contribution of the existence of data journalism and data-driven media to Indonesian society (deep mediatization) by evaluating data journalism outputs in Indonesian news media, measuring data journalism knowledge among journalists, revealing challenges faced by the journalists, and proposing ways to enhance Indonesian journalists’ data journalism capabilities based on the assessment done to the data-driven reporting products and the journalists’ knowledge. Her research will employ a mixed-method approach which combines quantitative analysis (computational model) with in-depth interviews.
She holds a Master’s degree in media and communication with a specialization in data journalism from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (Fulbright Scholar) and completed a professional program in computational journalism at Columbia University (Lede Fellowship). She also received a Data Bootcamp fellowship from the U.S. Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE) at the University of Missouri.
Prior to this, Utami worked as a lecturer. researcher, and journalist for several media outlets, including CNN Indonesia and The Jakarta Post, and was part of the Data Innovation Team at UN Global Pulse Jakarta.
In addition to her role as a lecturer, Utami is also active as a speaker, judge, and instructor in data journalism. She has collaborated with organizations such as IDJN, AJI, Journocoders Indonesia, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo), Statistics Indonesia (BPS), The Jakarta Post, Kompas, Tempo Institute, the Indonesian Association of Media Development (PPMN), private institutions, and numerous universities across Indonesia, including BINUS and Universitas Airlangga.
