YUJIN CHAO

Yujin Chao is an Affiliate of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society from Monash University.

Yujin’s research sits at the intersection of anthropology of labour and science and technology studies (STS) and currently centres on workers’ mental health care in relation to emerging technologies across the Global South and North.

Previously, Yujin completed studies at UvA (the Netherlands) and UoA (Aotearoa New Zealand). Their published work addresses themes including migrant mental health, union building within the platform economy, and the labour experiences of food delivery workers, with a focus on the Chinese context.

Yujin’s thesis Automating Care: how automation affects self- and community-care of workers in China and Australia is part of the project exploring the role of platformed artificial intelligence in workplaces. Their thesis contributes to this investigation by comparing mental health care in Chinese and Australian workplaces with and without automation.

Yujin will be embarking on an embedded ethnographic research project in China in 2026 as a part of the commencement of my fieldwork
