Community Learning for Inclusive AI

Responding to the National AI Plan’s goal to ‘spread the benefit’ of AI to all Australians, this project evaluates and supports community-based collective learning among ten AI Hubs coordinated by Good Things Australia. A core aim is to better understand the way AI is affecting digital inclusion and ability across diverse communities.

The research will establish scalable methods for supporting the development of AI capable citizens, with the knowledge, confidence and safety they need to navigate the introduction of AI in their lives.

The AI Hubs are developing and delivering programs to build critical AI capability among those most at risk of digital exclusion – particularly people with disability, older adults and culturally and linguistically diverse communities. The program combines capacity-building through a Community of Practice (CoP), and delivery of AI literacy and skills support through the ten AI Hubs enabling locally grounded, inclusive approaches to AI learning.

This project is part of the Critical Capabilities for Inclusive AI signature project, and complements the Telstra supported project Critical AI Capabilities Index (CAIC Index): Measuring Safe and Equitable AI Inclusion.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Establish a scalable program logic and evaluation framework supporting a model of community AI learning.
Generate case studies from empirical evidence to showcase the value of community learning for AI literacy.

Identify the resources, resources and formats needed to achieve successful community AI learning through action research with the AI Hubs and digital mentors.
