Congratulations to ADM+S Chief Investigator Prof Jackie Leach Scully from UNSW who is one of 41 new Fellows elected to the Australian Academy of the Humanities (AAH) in 2024.
Prof Leach Scully is an internationally recognised bioethicist specialising in disability and feminist bioethics, and is a Professor of Bioethics and Director of the Disability Innovation Institute at UNSW.
In the 21 November announcement, President of the Academy Prof Stephen Garton said, “Each of our Fellows are working at the forefront of issues of national and international importance and exemplify why ethical, historical, creative and cultural knowledge and expertise is critical to better decision making for a resilient society.
“Fellows elected today are exemplary leaders working in critical spaces where Australia needs to be — building our understanding of Asia and the Pacific, truth-telling and shedding light on a shared history and shaping our national artistic and cultural identity.”
Prof Leach Scully’s research is influenced by feminist theory and investigates the socio-ethical impacts of technological innovation, especially for people with disability and other marginalised communities.
“I began my academic life as a molecular biologist, so it’s a special honour to be recognised by colleagues in the humanities, the area that has since become my home,” said Prof Leach Scully.
“It illustrates the open and interdisciplinary approach that I believe we need to flourish as a global community in the future.”
