Three researchers from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) have been appointed to the International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE)—a new, independent global science organization committed to providing actionable scientific knowledge about threats to the world’s information environment.

ADM+S researchers Dr Dang Nguyen, Dr Damiano Spina and Prof Annette Markham from RMIT University join a consortium of researchers from around the world as a global scientific effort to analyse systems of information manipulation and bias, provide neutral assessments on the condition of the global information environment and evaluate the best policy solutions for addressing threats to it.

ADM+S Research Fellow Dr Dang Nguyen said “It is a privilege to be part of a global response to the multifaceted issues facing our information environment. I’m looking forward to collaborating with colleagues from various disciplines around the world to build consensus around how we might better understand these issues and create global impact with our research.”

With contributions from hundreds of leading scientists worldwide, IPIE strives to empower policymakers, industry leaders, and civil society with invaluable insights for a better global information environment.

“Our information environment is deteriorating and initiatives like ADM+S and IPIE are crucial to to get together experts from different disciplines to work towards tangible solutions and more effective ways of communicating scientific findings to the broader society,” said ADM+S Associate Investigator Dr Damiano Spina.

Prof Annette Markham, ADM+S Affiliate, said “As part of the IPIE effort, I am joined by people around the world to consolidate our expertise around critical ethical concerns. The groundswell around the IPIE initiative signals a shift to new levels and scales of intervention in the fight against information disorder.”

The IPIE announced its official launch yesterday at the Nobel Prize Summit 2023 – Truth, Trust and Hope and introduced its first 200+ affiliates, specialised panels and research agenda to the world.
