Thesis Title
Whose results are these? Counter-mapping relationships between user, place, and targeted content in online maps

Research Description
This project will use counter-mapping and other critical cartographic approaches – often deployed when knowledge and/or power asymmetries exist between a map’s creator and its user(s) – and apply them to the mapping products produced by Google, Bing, and Apple. It will gather data to visualise the relationships between user, place, and targeted content – specifically ads and search results – in order to highlight, characterise and critique the algorithmic processes that might drive such targeting.
