Professor Flora Salim has been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE), recognising her outstanding contribution to computer science and the development of human-centric artificial intelligence (AI).

Professor Salim, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW Sydney and Chief Investigator at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making (ADM+S), is among 34 new Fellows elected to ATSE in 2026 for their achievements across applied science and engineering, including research, industry leadership, policymaking and commercialisation.

ATSE President Dr Cathy Foley AO PSM FTSE FAA congratulated the new Fellows, describing election to the Academy as one of the highest honours recognising achievement in Australian technology and engineering.

“Election to ATSE is one of the highest honours and recognition of achievement in Australian technology and engineering, and is also a testament to the Fellows’ impact, leadership and expertise,” said Dr Foley

Professor Salim is recognised for her work driving human-centric AI, with research spanning machine learning, data science and the development of AI systems designed to better serve people and society.

The 2026 cohort includes leaders and innovators working across technology and engineering, from data-centre infrastructure and artificial intelligence to medical technology, defence and science communication.

ATSE said its Fellows play an active role in contributing expertise to national conversations, advising government and supporting education and STEM workforce programs. In the past year, Fellows collectively volunteered around 4,000 hours to these activities.
