ADM+S researchers awarded 2025 Queensland-Bavaria Collaborative Research Grants

Author ADM+S
Date 23 October 2025

ADM+S researchers from QUT have been awarded more than $100,000 under the 2025 Queensland-Bavaria Collaborative Research Program, supporting research in the use of AI in news personalisation and online search.

The program, jointly funded by the Queensland Government and the Bavarian State Government, aims to foster international research collaborations and translate research into industry, environmental and societal benefits.

Among the successful projects, those led by researchers from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society at QUT included:

Personalised news: balancing editorial and audience values in AI alignment
QUT and Technical University of Munich, with ABC and Bayerischer Rundfunk

ADM+S researchers Dr Aaron Snoswell and Distinguished Prof Jean Burgess have been awarded a $109,933 development grant to develop new AI tools that align news personalisation with editorial integrity, helping public service media deliver trusted, values-aligned journalism in the GenAI era.

This project is part of the ADM+S project: Evaluating Automated Cultural Curating and Ranking Systems with Synthetic Data.

Interrogating the AI turn in search: pilot studies comparing AI summaries in German and Australian search
QUT and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich

The Australian Search Experience 2.0 (ASE 2.0), led by ADM+S Chief Investigator Prof Axel Bruns, will analyse how AI-generated Information Summaries (AIIS) in search engines shape public understanding of key issues, comparing results in Germany and Australia to inform responsible AI governance and information quality online.

Through the Queensland-Bavaria Seed grant, Prof Bruns, along with ADM+S colleagues Prof Daniel Angus, Dr Ashwin Nagappa, Kateryna Kasianenko, Shir Weinbrand and Brett Tweedie, extends the scope of ASE 2.0 into an international context.

Queensland Chief Scientist Professor Kerrie Wilson said the Queensland–Bavaria Collaborative Research Program bridges the gap between some of the top research institutions in the world.

“By combining forces and forging partnerships through this program, we can further elevate the international reputation of our research institutions for producing high quality, innovative solutions to our shared challenges and ambitions.

“I am excited to see the groundbreaking research projects supported through this program, aligning with the Future Queensland Science Strategy to promote innovation, tackle global challenges and establish Queensland as a hub for scientific excellence.”
